Where it all began .....

Kevin Spry was a young butcher who moved from Gnowangerup in the states great southern, where he completed his butcher trade, to Bunbury with his family to work in a butchers shop in Harvey. In 1977 Kev was offered the managers position at the Co-op butchers in Collie, which was 1 of 9 butchers in the town at the time.

In 1978 he moved to Collie with the family instead of traveling everyday for work. In 1982 the new Supa Value was opened in the old Co-op building where Kev remained until 1983 when he did not sign a new lease. 

It was now that the decision was made to open his own shop on the corner of Atkinson and Jones Streets, the old garage. 

Spys Meat Market Early Days

Growing the business

Along with his wife Lorraine, they turned his new shop into a true family affair. Their boys Graham, Dion and Aaron were a part of the workforce at various times throughout the years. They built a strong reputation for quality of product and Kev's love of a yarn.

In 2003 Aaron, with his wife Geraldine, took over from Kev and Lorraine, carrying on the family name and continued to build on what had already been established. By this time Spry's Meat Market had become the stand alone butchers shop in the town. With the word spreading of the products that were available and an increase in contractors through the town, the shop had out grown the old garage.

 

Aaron and Geraldine expanded, firstly trying a second shop on Throssell St, before renovating the main shop to move into the empty space between the butchers and the deli.

Keeping with the family culture, Emma, Matt and Savannah were regularly seen in the shop. Matt doing dishes or the girls serving, with Poppy Kev coming back during busy periods to offer a hand. 

Continuing the Tradition

Although always being involved with the shop, Emma moved back to Collie with husband Regan to work in the shop. Emma was back at home behind the counter and Regan finished a mature age apprenticeship under Aaron. Carrying the values that Kev had started years before them, the Spry's team continues to serve original customers whilst introducing new products to keep up with social trends. Customers still enjoy a chat and a laugh whilst receiving the traditional service they have become accustomed to.

January 2021 has seen Aaron and Geraldine hand the reigns over to Em and Redge. Having 3rd generation owners in the family business was a milestone that has made everyone involved very proud.
